Booster's Billions

Jack Benny's butler, Scrooge McDuck and the stimulus package. I tie them all together with very odd string.

New Place to Eat in Cary [Apr. 17th, 2009|11:40 am]
Ok, well, it's not a new place, exactly, but it has become more of a place to eat (as opposed to a place to go and buy food to eat elsewhere).

To say that La Farm Bakery in Cary is the best bakery in Cary is to sell it short considerably. Best in North Carolina is better but still may be faint praise. And now, just when I was starting to get my weight headed in the right direction again, they have added a cafe with light table service and an espresso bar.

Photo0072

The lovely wife and I had breakfast there this morning. The croissant stuffed with scrambled eggs, ham and Gruyere was lovely, the cream tart with berries was wonderful and my espresso macciato was perfect.

And, of course, they still have their bakery counter.

Meta Puzzle [Apr. 6th, 2009|10:31 am]
I don't usually click on ads I see on web pages I am reading but this one caught my attention and I clicked it.

tri

Clicking it leads to this page on a domain named quizapanda.com which claims to be the first question in an IQ test. The page offers four multiple choice answers:

A.16 C.20
B.17 D.21

Those of you with a mathematical bent will notice that all four answers are wrong. But that happens.

Wondering if anyone else had noticed I Googled for "quizpanda" and "trianges" and, sure enough, I found this thread discussing the question.

But, on closer inspection, I found that the discussion was not about the page I had seen but a different page on quizpanda that offered the same question as a "warmup question" ... but with four different wrong answers:

A.29 C.64
B.30 D.81

So, here is my puzzle for you: What is going on with the Quizpanda web site? Why do they have the same IQ question twice with two different sets of all-wrong answers? One set of wrong answers I could understand but two non-overlapping sets of bogus foils makes you wonder what they are up to.

Any theories?

Oh, by the way, the right answer is 27. That's 16 triangles with sides of length 1, 7 more with sides of length 2, 3 with length 3, and 1 with length 4. To see them, click the yellow button on this page.

Pat a Cake [Oct. 23rd, 2008|05:30 pm]
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, mugger man

Give my your dough as fast as you can

I'll bat you, and roll you, and mark you with "B"

And put you in the hospital for Barack and me.

While it is unfair to blame to Obama campaign for this I would like a brief hiatus in the reporting of the hateful things that McCain supporters may (or may not) have shouted at a rally.

A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.
Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.

(no subject) [Sep. 22nd, 2008|04:47 pm]
The gym where I work out has televisions by the treadmills set on various stations. Each TV has a sign giving the FM frequency you can use to listen to the sound. I frequently use my time at the gym as an opportunity to catch up on the news so I tune my radio to pick up the audio from one of the news channels. When I was in the other day the television they had tuned to Fox News was broadcasting its audio on 93.5 which conflicts with a nearby classic rock station. As I moved from machine to machine the TV sound and the radio station would randomly cut back and forth. It could get pretty funny at times.

My favorite was when the song Funky Town was playing. It starts with the synthesizer riff.

Dee dee da dee dee da de dah dah dah... eaking to a women's roundtable today in Charlotte, North Carolina, Michelle Obama urged them not to vote for someone just because "she's cute". In response, the McCai... Talk about it! Talk about it! Talk about it! Oooh a oh!

St Baldricks [Mar. 12th, 2008|06:21 pm]

This past Saturday was the St Baldrick's foundation event at the Hibernian Pub in Cary. Daughter, [info]ivanafox , was a participant who had her head shaved to raise money for children's cancer research. Her participant's page at the St Baldrick's site is here. To offer her moral support, and because I was due for a haircut anyway, I signed up as a shavee at the event and wife, [info]irenegch , donated twenty bucks to pay for my haircut. My ability to raise funds for St Baldricks is quite limited since anyone who wants to know what I look like bald need only ask me to remove my hat, but my daughter raised quite a bit.

Several people have asked me to post a photo of her and of me so they could see if she, with all her hair cut off, looks like me. Ok, I live to please my readers.

Photo under cut... )

New Years Day Photo [Jan. 10th, 2008|11:42 pm]
Several people on my friends list are in this photo taken New Years Day morning.

composite

Here is what we looked like coming out of JR's after breakfast on new years day 2008. If you are in this picture and a diet is one of your new year's resolutions this can be your before photo.

This is a composite of two photos, one taken by me (I am on your left) and one taken by Caran (on your right). The splice isn't quite perfect but it is pretty dang good, if I do say so myself.

Finish this list. [Jan. 9th, 2008|01:50 pm]
Woot.com recently had a daily special where you could buy three mostly-crappy calendars for a buck (plus their flat $5 shipping). Today in their blog they offer replacement art for January for people who bought calendars they can't stand to look at. (Just print it out and tape it over this month's calendar page.)

Your assignment is to follow this link to their posting, click on the image detail to see the full drawing and then come back here to complete this list.

I'll do the first two. Starting at the top, just right of center, clockwise:

1) Christmas
2) Valentine's Day
3) ________________
4) ________________
5) ________________

To view this 3D photo relax your eyes and let them cross slightly so you see three images. Try to concentrate on the image in the middle. It takes some practice but most people can do it.

This photo was taken using the hand-held cha-cha method. You take a photo, step slightly to the right and take another one of the same subject. I've cleaned up the result, cropped the photos to align better and joined them together.

The result is passable but could be better. For 3D photos you want large f-numbers for large depth of field but with a hand held Kodak v705 in the fading evening light that wasn't in the cards. Also, the camera seems to have selected a different subject to focus on in the two shots.

Self-discovery [Apr. 19th, 2007|03:25 pm]
I had the odd experience today of having my own name pop out when I Googled for something else. I was wondering about an old friend -- someone I haven't seen, as far as I can recall for almost 30 years. He has a bit of an unusual name so I typed it into Google and what should pop up but a (sadly closed) ebay auction for a 1974 fanzine that listed him and me as contributors!

Apparently, whatever my friend is up to does not leave much of an on-line trail. The only other match for my friend's full name was in an obituary where someone with his name was listed as the deceased's mother. If that was him I just don't want to know...
